SIGNAL TO BE SAFE!

“All it takes is a flick of the wrist,” said AAA Northern California spokesperson Matt Skryja. “This simple action can help prevent injury and aggravation.”

By signaling where they plan on driving (turning, changing lanes, etc.), motorists are letting others on the road or sidewalks know their intentions. This is critical to safety, as it helps other drivers prepare to make any adjustments needed in their own speed or positioning so they don’t interfere with the movements of the signaling motorist. Signaling can also help pedestrians anticipate the direction of a vehicle that may cross their paths.
Here are several reasons why signaling is so important for traffic safety.

• Advance Notice - By not signaling, you don’t give nearby drivers any advance notice of your intentions, which increases the chance that they will collide with you. Make sure the signal comes before an action is taken, not during it, so those around you have time to anticipate and prepare for your actions.

• Capture Drivers’ Eyes - The human eye is attracted to movement, and blinking turn signals capture the eyes of nearby drivers. This can give them enough advance notice of your intentions so they can make any needed adjustments in speed or position.

• Courteous Driving - Signaling is courteous driving. It shows respect to those around you by letting them know you value your safety and theirs. Using a blinker also helps keep tempers from flaring and prevents road rage, which may be caused by a dangerous or quick action on the part of a non-signaling driver.

Communication is an exchange of information. It involves sending and receiving information, and using a blinker is just one way drivers can communicate with those around them. Besides turn signals, brake lights, back-up lights, and four-way emergency flashers all send important messages. Hand signals for turning can also be used if there is an electrical failure. —Article courtesy of AAA Northern California

“She was very afraid of her upcoming driving examination. Don’s calm manner. . .”

“Overall I was very happy with the driving lessons that my friend had with Don, an instructor at Bills Defensive Driving School. She was very afraid of her upcoming driving examination. Don’s calm manner, and the way he phrased things and presented them in a formalized, repetitive manner, helped her really learn and gain confidence. She passed her test and was so excited and happy. Yes, I would recommend Don as an instructor, definitely."

“After a severe restriction was put on my license. . . ”

"After a severe restriction was put on my license by the DMV, I knew I was in need of serious retraining! I tried one school that was pretty lax and didn’t offer many suggestions at all. But after my first lesson with Bills Defensive Driving School, I knew I had a teacher who could help me. Bill pays attention to every detail; he sees things on the road I never knew existed; approaching hazards, traffic changes, small sign posts, etc. He emphasizes defensive driving techniques over and over again! He also knows the DMV rules and regulations inside and out and how to negotiate through all of the paperwork and people there. This week I received great news from the DMV, thanks to all of my lessons with Bill, and the paperwork he filed for me; I’ve had the severest restrictions lifted from my driver’s license!"
