GUIDE FOR TEENS UNDER 18

SIMPLE STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR TEENS UNDER 18

If you are under 17 1/2 years old, but at least 15 1/2 years old:

You must complete 30 hours of Drivers Education, before you are eligible to take the written knowledge test to obtain your Learners Permit. This Online Education can be completed before turning 15 1/2 years old, so you can get your permit after you turn 15 1/2 years old. Per CA regulations, permits are valid for 1 year from the date of first attempt to pass the written knowledge test.

Please Note:
Once you receive your learner’s permit, you are required to have a minimum of 6 hours of lessons with a CA DMV Licensed Driving School. (Our License number is E4362)

Your 1st Driving Lesson is required to be completed by a Licensed Driving Instructor as soon as possible to validate your permit before it is legal for you to start practicing with anyone 25 years or older with a valid Drivers License.

It is illegal for you to operate a vehicle with anyone, (even with your parents) before the first lesson is completed.
(See page 2 of your permit 1st paragraph)

CA DMV regulations state that the 1st lesson must be with a Driving School to validate your permit.

This is our suggested spacing to complete the 6 hours:

  • 1st Lesson: As soon as possible after passing the written test to validate the permit.
  • 2nd lesson: 2 – 3 weeks later.
  • 3rd lesson: 4 – 6 weeks after that.

This will satisfy your minimum 6 hour requirement for California. After the 3rd lesson a completion certificate will be issued by the Driving Instructor. We do highly encourage Parent’s to ride along on all lessons if possible.

We also recommend a 4th lesson 4 weeks before your eligibility for the Behind the Wheel Test at the DMV for your Provisional License. (Which is 6 months after the date the permit is issued)

The beginning 6 hours of lessons (3 – 2 hour sessions is the minimum requirement) we set a good foundation for the different driving environments you will encounter while practicing during your required 6 month waiting period before taking the Behind the Wheel Test for your Provisional License. During this 6 months, Parents are required to do a minimum of 50 hours of practice with you and 10 hours of the 50 hours are to be performed at night.

(Parents are required to sign the second-page 2nd paragraph to attest to this when the 6-month period has ended) Note: You are required to present the completion certificate, and your validated permit when you take the behind-the-wheel test for your Provisional License, after the 6 month waiting period,

Do not misplace the Completion Certificate: If you do contact us at 877-689-1480, to arrange for another certificate before you schedule a behind-the-wheel test at the DMV. If you show up without the Completion Certificate and your validated permit, the DMV will cancel your appointment and you will have to reschedule for another day.

If you are over 17 1/2 years when you receive your Learners Permit, you are not eligible to take the Behind the wheel test until you are 18, the 30 hours of online education is not required, and neither is the 6 hours of required behind the wheel training with a Driving School. However we still recommend 6 hours as a good place to start to develop your driving ability safely.

Remember: We highly encourage Parents or whomever you will be practicing with the most to ride along on every lesson, if possible, then our Instructor can make suggestions on what should be worked on in between the lessons to develop your defensive driving ability safely.
